RCD Testing Explained: Requirements, Frequency and Cost in NSW

An RCD — a residual current device, or "safety switch" — cuts power in a fraction of a second when it detects electricity leaking to earth, which is what stops a fault from becoming a fatal shock or an electrical fire. Because that split-second matters so much, RCDs have to be tested to prove they still trip fast enough. Here's what that involves for a NSW workplace, how often it's due, and how it fits alongside your test and tag.

What is RCD testing?

RCD testing is checking that your safety switches actually disconnect power when a fault occurs — and disconnect quickly enough to protect a person. It's covered by AS/NZS 3760, the same standard behind test and tag, and it involves two separate checks that do different jobs.

  1. 1The push-button test. Pressing the "T" (test) button confirms the switch is mechanically free and trips. It's quick, and anyone can do it — but it only proves the button-and-mechanism works, not that the RCD trips fast enough.
  2. 2The trip-time test. Using an instrument, a competent person injects a controlled fault and measures the actual disconnection time in milliseconds. This is the test that proves the RCD will protect a person in a real fault, and it's why push-button testing alone isn't enough.

A safety switch can pass the push-button test and still fail the trip-time test — the mechanism moves, but too slowly to prevent injury. That's the gap professional testing closes.

How fast should an RCD trip?

An RCD should disconnect the circuit in no more than around 300 milliseconds for a standard 30 mA (Type II) device — faster still for more sensitive types. Beyond that window, the protection it's there to provide can't be relied on, which is exactly what the trip-time test measures.

How often does RCD testing need to be done?

It depends on the environment — AS/NZS 3760 scales the intervals to how harsh and high-risk the setting is. As a general guide:

  • Offices and low-risk commercial settings: push-button tests roughly every 6 months, with a trip-time test by a competent person around every 12 months.
  • Factories, workshops and hostile environments: more frequent push-button testing, with trip-time testing typically annually.
  • Construction and demolition sites: the most stringent — portable RCDs are visually checked and push-button tested very frequently (often before use), with instrument testing on a short cycle, reflecting the wet, dusty, mechanically harsh conditions. (Construction sites also fall under AS/NZS 3012.)

How is RCD testing different from test and tag?

They're related but not the same. Test and tag (AS/NZS 3760) checks portable, plug-in appliances — leads, tools, chargers, kettles. RCD testing checks the safety switches that protect those circuits. Both live under AS/NZS 3760, and a provider who does both can test your appliances and your RCDs in the one visit, with one set of records — which is how we do it across Sydney.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is RCD testing a legal requirement in NSW?

Workplaces have a duty to keep electrical equipment safe, and RCD testing to AS/NZS 3760 is the recognised way to demonstrate that safety switches work. For many sites — especially construction — it's an expected part of compliance.

Can I just push the test button myself?

You can, and regular push-button checks are good practice, but the push-button test only confirms the mechanism moves. It doesn't measure trip time, so it can't confirm the RCD will actually protect someone. A competent person needs to do the instrument trip-time test at the required interval.

How often should RCDs be tested on a construction site?

Construction environments are the most demanding — portable RCDs are checked very frequently (often before use) and instrument-tested on a short cycle, because the conditions are wet, dusty and mechanically harsh. We'll confirm the exact schedule for your site.
