Fire Extinguisher Testing in Australia: How Often, What's Checked and Who Can Do It

Owning a fire extinguisher isn't the same as being compliant. To be relied on in an emergency — and to satisfy your insurer and a fire-safety audit — every extinguisher has to be serviced and tagged on a set schedule under AS 1851. Here's what that schedule looks like, what a technician actually checks, and an important recent change for NSW.

How often do fire extinguishers need testing?

Portable fire extinguishers in Australia follow a three-tier maintenance cycle under AS 1851:

1. 1Every 6 months — a routine inspection and re-tag. The technician checks the extinguisher is charged, undamaged, accessible and correctly located, and updates the service tag.
2. 2Every 12 months — a more detailed service that adds checks like signage visibility and secure mounting on top of the 6-monthly items.
3. 3Every 5 years — a hydrostatic pressure test, where the unit is emptied, the cylinder inspected internally and pressure-tested. In practice many extinguishers are replaced at the 5-year mark rather than refurbished, because replacement is often the more economical option.

Fire blankets sit on the same rhythm — a condition inspection every 6 months to confirm they're present, undamaged and accessible.

Important: AS 1851 is now mandatory in NSW

This is recent and worth knowing. In NSW, compliance with AS 1851-2012 became mandatory from 13 February 2026 for Class 1b and Class 2–9 buildings, under the Environmental Planning and Assessment (Development Certification and Fire Safety) Regulation 2021. If your building carries a fire-safety schedule, these servicing intervals are no longer just best practice — they're the law, and missed intervals can affect both compliance and insurance.

What's checked in a 6-monthly service?

A routine service is a systematic check that the extinguisher will work when it's needed. A technician confirms the pressure gauge reads in the operable range, the tamper seal and safety pin are intact, the hose and nozzle are clear and undamaged, the unit is the correct weight (undischarged), and it's mounted, signed and accessible. They then stamp and date the metal service tag and record the service in your fire-safety register.

Who can test and tag fire extinguishers?

Fire extinguisher servicing must be done by a competent, accredited fire-protection technician — not a self-check. A quick glance at the gauge yourself is sensible between services, but only a qualified technician's tag satisfies AS 1851, your insurer and a WHS audit. If a fire occurs and your tags are out of date, an insurer may have grounds to question a claim.
